Sterrenplaten: Saint Abdullah ‘Mixtape’

In this week’s Sterrenplaten we’ve got a very special guest visit, from Saint Abdullah. The Iranian brothers Moh and Mehdi Mehrabani-Yeganeh, whom we discovered through the stellar records ‘Stars Have Eyes‘ (Purple Tape Pedigree) and ‘Ta Tash‘ (Boomarm Nation) will present a unique piece consisting of sound recordings recorded over the past 18 months. “Mostly on the iPhone X, and sometimes using a half-decent plug-in mic. We’re working on our fourth album right now and spent some time going through the files. And so we decided, in a very light hearted way, to share 13 with you. ”

“The majority of these sounds are from day-to-day life in New York. They’re not intended to be spectacular, but really to represent the unspectacular; the circumstances that present sound or stories that you can’t help but capture, as you go about your day. You can either get drowned out by the noise this city relentlessly presents, or tune in, and capture it in all its diversity.

While the focus is life in New York, we start and end with two pieces from our travels this past summer. The first is a recording from playing a fence in a park in Berlin this past July, watching the spectacular bloody moon. We end with a 10 minute recording from the Zadar (Croatia) sea organ, hole 1. This is an organ that’s built on the promenade next to the sea in Zadar, that is “played” by the waves of the sea. Constant improvisation at the will of the waves.”

Sterrenplaten is thrilled to air the piece on Radio Scorpio this Friday.

Sterrenplaten: MDCIII (+ vrijkaarten Bozar / Het Depot)

Na de titelloze EP die n.a.v. Record Store Day eerder dit jaar verscheen, pakte saxofonist Mattias De Craene (Nordmann) samen met twee drummers –  Simon Segers  (De Beren Gieren / Absynthe Minded) en Lennert Jacobs (The Germans / Hong Kong Dong)  – ofte MDCIII dit najaar uit met de fantastische debuutplaat ‘Dreamhatcher‘ op W.E.R.F. Records.

Op ‘Dreamhatcher’ worden tegenstellingen nooit uitgesloten. Wat het ene moment nog abstract of ingetogen is, kan even later in extase omslaan. Verschuivende stemmingen en texturen worden gecombineerd met de ritme-tandem. Het resultaat is veel dingen tegelijk, maar ondanks de uiteenlopende kleuren, texturen en sferen, zijn ze ook allemaal gelinkt en onderdeel van een genereus geheel. Met twee Radio Scorpio – A-lijst hits als logisch gevolg.

Nu vrijdag komt het trio de plaat voorstellen in Sterrenplaten, en dit aan de hand van een rits aan uiteenlopende invloeden. En er is meer: voor de twee volgende concerten van MDCIII heeft Sterrenplaten tijdens de uitzending ook vrijkaarten veil:

  • op vrijdag 30/11 opent MDCIII het gloednieuwe BOZAR-festival ‘4th Stream‘ “Dedicated to the new wave of Jazz”, voor James Brandon Lewis Trio, Jameszoo Quintet, Dinosaur, Thiefs, Shntzl, The Headhunters en Soweto Kinch, gespreid over twee dagen. Je maakt kans op een festival-pass!
  • Op  woensdag 12/12 staat MDCIII op een double bill in Het Depot samen met BeraadGeslagen (Lander Gyslinck en Fulco Ottervanger)
